xAI: AI to understand reality 🤔

Elon Musk wants to build an AI to understand the true nature of the universe — and he’s calling it xAI.

Ok, now we know why he was buying thousands of GPUs.

But, what will the company do, exactly?

We still don’t know “how” or “what” exactly this new company will do, but there are some very unique strengths behind what Elon Musk can do with it.

Lots of available data

He has lots of multimodal data from Twitter, consisting of images, text conversations, and videos from Twitter — and he has the only legal right to use this data.

He can also use his enormous corpus of “fleet data” from Tesla, which is a collection of data points generated by connected fleet vehicles, assets, operators, and back office systems.

All-star team

Also, the team is an “all-star” formation, with folks who built some of the core technologies that power AI systems today. Some also worked for DeepMind & OpenAI.

Most of them specialize in large language models(LLMs) and reinforcement learning, which teaches AI models to accomplish tasks by rewarding them for performing those tasks.

He also hinted that he wants to build a “TruthGPT” so maybe they’ll work on a ChatGPT-like bot that will align “truth” first.

🦙 Shopify launches Shopify Sidekick. It’s a chatbot that lives in your Shopify dashboard that can answer sales questions — but can also do things for you. For example, you can put all of your products on sale, just by writing a message to the “Sidekick”, in plain English. Great execution by the Shopify team!

👀 Google shipped a new version of Bard. You can now access Bard in new languages and countries, customize responses, and add images to your prompts. You can also listen to Bard’s responses!

🏋🏻‍♀️  Google launched an AI note-taking app: NotebookLM. It can summarize documents, answer questions, and generate ideas. I guess “big-corp” is catching up to all of the indie products from the last few months.
