Code Llama: An AI tool for coding, by Meta

A new win for open-sourced AI models.

Meta released a code-focused language model called Code Llama, which was created by further training Llama 2 on its code-specific datasets.

How does it work

It can generate code, and natural language about code, from both code and natural language prompts (e.g., “Write me a function that outputs the Fibonacci sequence.”)

It can also be used for code completion and debugging.

It supports many of the most popular languages being used today, including Python, C++, Java, PHP, Typescript (Javascript), C#, and Bash.

Performance

CodeLlama-python is better than GPT-3.5, but still trailing behind GPT-4.

However, it is significantly better than Codex, which is what GitHub copilot uses — and we know that one’s good.

Model sizes

The models are finetuned from Llama-2 base models and come in 3 options: vanilla, Instruct, and Python. Model sizes are 7B, 13B, 34B.

The smallest model can run locally with a decent GPU.
